Source :

Bai Fangli - an inspiring legacy

In 1987, a 74-year old rickshaw puller by the name of Bai Fangli came back to his hometown planning to retire from his backbreaking job. There, he saw children working in the fields, because they were too poor to afford school fees.

Bai returned to Tianjin and went back to work as a rickshaw puller, taking a modest accommodation next to the railway station. He waited for clients 24 hours a day, ate simple food and wore discarded second-hand clothes he found. He gave all of his hard-earned earnings to support children who could not afford education.

In 2001, he drove his rickshaw to Tianjin YaoHua Middle School, to deliver his last installment of money. Nearly 90 years old, he told the students that he couldn't work any more. All of the students and teachers were moved to tears.

In total, Bai had donated a total of 350,000 yuan to help more than 300 poor students continue with their studies. In 2005, Bai passed away leaving behind an inspiring legacy.

If a rickshaw-puller who wore used clothes and had no education can support 300 children to go to school, imagine what you and I can do with the resources we have to bring about positive change in our world!

Blind Boy

Heart Touching Story of a Blind Boy... ( Must Read for all)

A blind boy sat on the steps of a building with a hat by his feet. He held up a sign which said: "I am blind, please help." There were only a few coins in the hat.

A man was walking by. He took a few coins from his pocket and dropped them into the hat. He then took the sign, turned it around, and wrote some words. He put the sign back so that everyone who walked by would see the new words.

Soon the hat began to fill up. A lot more people were giving money to the blind boy. That afternoon the man who had changed the sign came to see how things were. The boy recognized his footsteps and asked, "Were u the one who changed my sign this morning? What did u write?"

The man said, "I only wrote the truth. I said what u said but in a different way."

What he had written was: "Today is a beautiful day & I cannot see it."

Do u think the first sign & the second sign were saying the same thing? Of course both signs told people the boy was blind. But the first sign simply said the boy was blind. The second sign told people they were so lucky that they were not blind. Should we be surprised that the second sign was more effective?

Be thankful for what you have.

I want to Say 'Sorry' & 'Thank you'

I would like to say two thing. Sorry & Thank you.

I'm sure almost everyone would have felt to say them in most of the times and may have missed the correct time/opportunity to express/say them.

Here comes mine. I'm sure this is
     - going to help me with a great relief and chance for realization (if any).
     - & not going to impact/harm my ego & attitude in anyway as people would normally have such hesitation sometimes. :)

I'm Sorry to anyone who felt that i have hurt you in anyway in any of my interaction with you, be it a professional or personal interaction.

I'm sure it might not be intentional/personal and may be due to the scenario @ the moment (or) as part of job, scenario i was in and the priorities i had might have forced/made me to do something which might not have been nice to you.  Sorry again please accept my apology.

Thank you to anyone who feel i have missed to Thank you in any of the previous instance where i could/should have. Thank you again please accept my Thank you.

You are most welcome to share your feedback/comment on both of the above scenario's if you have seen/felt with me in anyway, and wanted to share and help me.

I will gladly listen to it , check and work on it. After all life is about trying to improve ourselves in every possible way and make this world a better place to live for the new generations to come  :-)

'Sorry' and 'Thank You'

Are you longing to say 'thank you' or desperate to say 'sorry'?

Is there someone who has changed the course of your life forever? Someone you never got the chance to thank properly? Or someone you’ve wronged in the past who you feel a burning need to apologise to? Do you long to talk to them but can’t find the courage to do it alone? What if you’ve lost touch with them altogether?

Living with an unpaid debt of gratitude or a long overdue apology can be an enormous burden. For many thousands of people, it’s often impossible to move on until you’ve had the chance to express your feelings in person.

-------------------------------

I seriously do not comprehend the logic behind people saying “No Sorry or Thank you among friends”. Ok, So who else are you going to say it to? Your Enemies? Seriously? It is understandable that in friendship, the small things that may instigate bigger spats can always be overlooked. Hence friends do not like or rather prefer it, if their friends refrain from saying sorry or thank you. But my question is, they are our friends, Next to our family, or even on par with our family, Shouldn’t we treat them better? Don’t they deserve a thank you for all that they’ve been doing? Don’t they deserve a word of Sorry for all the times we irritated them? Or are we taking them for granted?

For a minute, let’s just get back to the basics. Two questions. Why Sorry? Why Thank You?

People say Sorry when they are deeply disturbed with something which should have never happened in the first place. Well generally that’s what people do. We say sorry when we feel we’ve hurt someone or caused them pain without intending to. We say sorry because we get scared that our actions might have hurt the sentiments of our friend and we apologize for having caused them pain. It might be just one word, but it conveys a lot of thoughts.

We Thank others either for taking their time off to tell us something or do us a favour. We say Thank you, because we appreciate the efforts of someone takes for us and as a token of our appreciation we thank them. We say “Thank you “because we value their time and presence. We say Thank you because despite their numerous commitments they always manage to find time for us, and it is just a simple way of letting them know that we value that and not take it for granted.

Now back again to our friends. Why shouldn’t we let them know that we’re happy they are spending time with us? Why shouldn’t we let them know how we feel after that bitter spat? Why is this considered formal? After all they are the ones who are an integral part of our lives. They are the ones who would always stand by us. They are the ones who would never think twice to come to our rescue. When you say Sorry to a stranger for stepping on their foot and When you say “Thank You” to a stranger for picking up our bags, why shouldn't we say Sorry and Thank you to those who mean a lot to us? Is it that big a deal?

What good would it do, if you knew a thousand meaningless words, and you do not know the value of two words uttered earnestly by a sincere soul?

'Sorry' hardest word to say for millions

More than 50 percent of people are living with the guilt of not having been able to say sorry, or even thank you, to someone who they should have acknowledged, a survey has showed.

And 65 percent of those said that they had missed the opportunity or were simply not able to say the words.

The findings of the study found that the over-55s were most likely to get embarrassed when they made amends after many years.

The 25 to 34 age group emerged as the one that was most prepared to apologise late rather than never.

Psychotherapist Lynn Greenwood told the Daily Express said that saying sorry often helped people move on from what can become a festering guilt or resentment.

She said that by expressing gratitude, people get pleasure of passing on a small part of their joy.

The study was done for Wall to Wall Television, which is making 'The Gift' for the BBC, a programme that gives people a chance to say sorry or thank you to someone from their past.

 ------------------------------

Mind set: Of thank you and sorry

Thank you and sorry are perhaps the first words we learn. And they stay with us right through our lives as yardsticks of our civility.

But when was the last time we said "thank you" or "sorry" without meaning to simply offload our burden of obligation or guilt? Indeed, these words no longer express what they are supposed to. Instead, they are used flippantly, thrown around without care, often reduced to an easy way of getting off the hook and evading meaningful action.

They may well be the most used words in times of political correctness. But they are clearly the most abused as well. The emotions of gratitude and apology are vital to the chain of human reciprocity. But in stripping them of sincerity, we also seem to be closing the doors on their benefits for us.

In almost all religious traditions, gratitude is a manifestation of virtuous character. "Gratitude, as it were, is the moral memory of mankind," wrote sociologist Georg Simmel. Scottish philosopher Thomas Brown defined gratitude as "that delightful emotion of love to him who has conferred kindness on us, the very feeling of which is itself no small part of the benefit conferred". German theologian Dietrich Bonhoeffer  wrote: "In ordinary life, we hardly realise that we receive a great deal more than we give, and that it is only with gratitude that life becomes rich."

The quality of being thankful implies the disposition to turn goodwill into action and the inclination to return kindness. A "thank you" denotes the attitude of positive acceptance, a determination to employ the kindness or blessing imaginatively and inventively. It connotes the humility of considering oneself the recipient of undeserved merit. "He who receives a benefit with gratitude repays the first instalment on his debt," observed Roman statesman Lucius Annaeus Seneca.

Gratitude comes endowed with the power to help us create the life we want and can be therapeutic. Gratefulness emanates from looking at what someone or something has done for us. It is, therefore, about positivity of outlook, which, in turn, generates optimism and energy. Conversely, the lack of gratefulness breeds negativity and despair. In fact, proponents of positive psychology, a recent branch of psychology that studies the strengths and virtues enabling individuals and communities to thrive, consider gratitude to be a pleasant emotional state like happiness, joy, love, curiosity and hope.

The lack of gratefulness is largely because we take things for granted, brashly presuming that they are either our rightful due or are far less than what we deserve. What holds us back from being grateful is such lack of contentment and an endless craving for more. Often, we insist on waiting for the results of an action or a blessing to show up before expressing gratitude. This indicates a dearth of trust and faith, which pays us back in our own coin.

In a way, gratitude helps us realise the benefits of mindful meditation, which is all about acknowledging and feeling connected with every breath and blessing of life. Invariably, a life with gratefulness as its pivot is also a solution to the ills spawned by insatiable human yearnings.

We might wonder where the need for gratitude is if we pay for goods and services in money. Gratitude doesn't even fetch us discounts. In fact, there is a subtle line of distinction between gratitude and ingratiation. So much so that when someone thanks us too many times, we start doubting his intention. However, as philosopher Adam Smith averred, gratitude is a vital civic virtue, essential for the healthy functioning of societies. He called gratitude a part of the moral capital required for human societies to flourish.

The act of offering and accepting an apology is as profound and healing a human interaction as that of expressing gratitude. But while the offhand "sorry about that" keeps flying around, our ego prevents us from realising its full potential. The word loses its impact when we refrain from acknowledging our offence ("Sorry for whatever I may have done") or throw in a self-serving conditionality ("I am sorry if you were hurt"). If the purpose of an apology is only to say, "While I don't think I was wrong, I will apologise because you say so", it is best not to offer one, for, the worst we can do is to insult someone's sensitivity or intelligence by such treatment.

Bestowed with the power to effect reconciliation and mend strained relationships, an apology must involve acknowledging the offense adequately, expressing genuine remorse and offering appropriate reparations, including a commitment to make changes. "A stiff apology is a second insult," said novelist and poet G K Chesterton. "The injured party does not want to be compensated because he has been wronged; he wants to be healed because he has been hurt."

தமிழ் கொஞ்சும்;

தமிழ் ஆனந்தம் பாடும்;

தமிழ் காதல் செய்யும்;

தமிழ் கோபப்படும்;

தமிழ் இரங்கும்;;

Sri Lanka's Killing Fields on 4 on Demand

Courtesy & Thanks : Leena Manimekalai & Channel 4

The director of a British documentary on last stages of Sri Lanka’s civil war has accused the West and the UN of failing to take any “effective action” to prevent alleged war crimes by the country’s security forces.

Callum Macrae, the director of “Sri Lanka Killing Fields: War Crimes Unpunished” said that many allegations against Sri Lanka government have been confirmed through leaked UN documents, US embassy cables revealed by Wikileaks and an interview former senior UN official John Holmes.

“The international community has an obligation of duty to protect which is a fundamental principal under international law. That duty was not carried out; the international community has failed on that,” he told BBC Sinhala service, Sandeshaya.

Mr Macrae says there were two major reasons for the “failure” by the international community to prevent Sri Lanka continuing with war crimes.

'Shelling UN workers'

“The climate this was allowed to happen was that Rajapaksa regime used the Western Agenda global war on terror to justify what they were doing,” he said.

The film, to be released next week in UK by the Channel4, also figures harrowing details of the killing of Rasmachandran Prabhakaran, 12, the younger son of Tamil Tiger leader Velupillai Prabhakaran.

Mr Macrae said the footage, recorded by a member of Sri Lankan armed forces, has been carefully examined by video experts to confirm that it was authentic.

“The forensic pathologist analysed and the moment of death from the nature of the wounds and it is clear that he was executed in cold blood,” he added.

The killing, together with other incidents of alleged executions by the security forces, is a clear proof that there was a “systematic pattern of executions of leading LLTE figures and fighters.”

The film alleges that orders for the alleged executions as well as “deliberate targeting of civilians” have come from the most senior commanders, including President Mahinda Rajapaksa, Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa and Commander of Sri Lanka Army, Gen Sarath Fonseka.

“The Sri Lankan military is very very disciplined and very organised. The men who have most frequently claimed direct control of the war were President Mahinda Rajapaksa and his brother Gotabhaya,” he said.

The film reveals, says Callum Macrae, how a group of UN workers were fired upon by the Sri Lanka military after the workers informed their GPS coordinates to the military.

“There were systematic shelling of the UN bunker and the area around it. When they protested about it, they were told were sent directly by Gotabhaya Rajapaksa and Sarath Fonseksa,” he said, adding that it shows the highest command was aware about the attacks into the no fire zone.

“Those men bear direct commanding responsibility for war crimes and crimes against humanity.”

The director said nobody would deny that the Tamil Tigers were also responsible for serious war crimes including the using civilians as a human shield in the war zone.

“The war crimes committed by the LTTE are clear and documented and are not challenged,” said Mr Macrae.

“However, it is important to recognise that the international community demands highest standards from a government which claim to be a democratically elected, legitimate government"

Tamil Nadu tops in organ donation

“Tamil Nadu's organ donation rate a model for country”

The country's target would be to reach Tamil Nadu' s rate of cadaveric organ donation of 1.3 per million people within the next two years, R.K. Srivastava, Director General of Health Services, Government of India, said here on Saturday.

At present the country's rate was 0.3 per million, and it is essential to bring the country level with Tamil Nadu, which was leading the nation in terms of cadaver organ transplantation, he added. “This is certainly going to require tremendous efforts. However if even one per cent of the patients in the hospitals who are brain dead can be declared as such, and the potential for organ donation tapped, we can reach 1.3 per million,” Dr. Srivastava said. The nation would have to go into ‘mission mode' to achieve this.

The DGHS was speaking at Samsaara (Circle of Life), a symposium on Organ Donation Awareness and Brain death organized jointly by his office, the Tamil Nadu Cadaver Transplant Programme, and Mohan Foundation.

Putting in place systems that will facilitate organ donation is at the core of increasing the number of cadaveric organs available for transplantation, he added. This is evident from Tamil Nadu, and even nations that have done much better, having reached a rate of 30/40 per million population. Even in these nations, there continued to be a scarcity of organs, with the number of people requiring life-saving organ transplantation's always being higher than the number of organs available, Dr. Srivastava explained. This makes the task of spreading awareness crucial and continuous.

Earlier, he released a ‘brain-death manual' and inaugurated the one-year PG diploma course for transplant co-ordinators, to be conducted by Mohan Foundation in association with IGNOU.

Mayilvahanan Natarajan, Vice-Chancellor, Tamil Nadu Dr. MGR Medical University, said the programme would have to include bone as an organ that can be harvested and transplanted. Awareness would have to be built on this concept too, he added. Most people think donating the bone means taking away the hand or leg, but that is not so, the Vice-Chancellor clarified.

Tamil Nadu leads country in organ donation

CHENNAI: When the state government honoured a couple who donated the organs of their teenaged son Hitendran in 2008, the state health department did not think that it would mark the beginning of a spurt of organ donation in the state.

The central registry for organ donation, formed on September 22, 2008, has recorded 120 transplants in the last one year, the highest in the country so far. Though states across the country have several people pledging organs, Tamil Nadu has managed to get families of the brain dead to sign the mandatory form giving permission to harvest vital organs, including heart, kidneys and liver. Besides these, there were 48 cornea, 26 heart valve and one skin donation. The registry even managed to touch base with neighbouring states like Karnataka from where one heart and three livers were harvested and brought to the city.

However, barring one donation from Stanley Medical College, none of the donations came from a government hospital. All other donations came from brain deaths recorded in private hospitals, including Apollo Hospitals, Chennai, Madurai Meenakshi Mission and Christian Medical College, Vellore, according to the webpage maintained by the Directorate of Medical and Rural Health Services. The government hospitals have done just three liver transplants and a few kidney transplants. They have no facilities to do heart transplants.

Registry co-ordinator Dr J Amalorpavanathan refused to comment on why no donations were made from the government hospitals. "In the last one year, we have improved a lot. We still have a long way to go. We are working towards that," he said.

But government hospital doctors admit that they don't even record brain deaths, the first step in the list of procedures for organ donation.

Brain death is the irreversible end of all brain activity (including involuntary activity necessary to sustain life) due to loss of blood flow and oxygenation. The patient is clinically dead and vital organs are supported by a life support system. The Transplantation of Human Organs Act permits doctors to harvest healthy vital organs like the eyes, heart, kidneys, lung and liver and transplant them to ailing patients.

In January 8, 2008, a government order from the state health department empowered the three government-run medical college hospitals in the city to declare brain deaths. Since then a series of government orders were passed by the health department to promote organ donation. Stanley Medical College Hospital was even given an exclusive five-bed ward for brain-dead patients.

"Most cases we see are accident victims, and the bodies have to undergo autopsy. To do a post-mortem all internal organs are required. What do we do if forensic experts accuse us of having destroyed evidence? That's why we don't immediately record brain deaths," said a senior neurologist at the Government General Hospital. "What we need is a GO to tell us what we should do in such circumstances. That order has been pending for more than eight months," he said.

Other doctors complain that they do not get remuneration equivalent to those in the private sector. "Private hospitals waive the hospital fee for the donor and charge recipients up to Rs 25 lakh for a liver transplant. We get nothing more than our salary for the marathon surgery," he said.

Health secretary VK Subburaj said, "We have been working towards getting all the legal hurdles removed for organ donation. In fact, we are also looking at setting our target at 500 donations next year. If we do that, we can eventually even reduce the number of live donations by several times," he said.

Most of the people are all fond of colors & light... And many are afraid of the dark... Sunrise is so encouraging for them. Life is so beautiful when they see the beautiful part of the world: the sun, the sky, the beautiful flora & fauna, the hills, the trees & rivers & streams... But not all are privileged for that...
But how about those who are not privileged with it...? What about those who are Visually Challenged? No doubt they are Not Disabled but are Differently-abled.
